Construction general And Safety
Yes, the law strictly requires head protection on construction sites.
In India, these regulations are primarily governed by the Building and Other
Construction Workers (BOCW) Act, 1996, and the central rules framed under it.
"We ensure 100% compliance with BOCW safety standards,
mandating ISI-marked head protection and PPE for every individual on our sites."
"Our site supervisors are trained in emergency first aid and incident management,
ensuring that safety is managed proactively on every project."
1. The First Aid Box (Mandatory)
Every site must have a clearly marked, dust-proof first aid box that is easily accessible to all workers. For larger sites, there should be one box for every 50 to 100 workers.
A standard site first aid box should contain:
Wound Care: Adhesive bandages (Band-Aids), sterile gauze pads, and rolls of bandages.
Antiseptics: Dettol/Savlon, antiseptic cream, and alcohol swabs.
Ointments: Burnol or burn-relief gels.
Instruments: Scissors, tweezers, and safety pins.
Medical Basics: Eye wash solution, triangular bandages for fractures, and sterile gloves.
Record Book: A small logbook to record every injury and treatment provided.
2. Trained First Aiders
Having the equipment is not enough; the law requires people who know how to use it.
At least one person for every group of workers should be trained in Basic Life Support (BLS) and first aid.
On larger projects, a certified Safety Officer or a dedicated medical assistant should be present on-site during working hours.
3. Emergency Communication
A "Safety Station" or the first aid area should have a clear display of:
Emergency Contact Numbers: Nearest hospital, ambulance service, fire station, and police.
Site Address: The exact location and entry gate instructions to guide an ambulance quickly.
4. Specialized Equipment (For High-Risk Sites)
Depending on the nature of your work (like Railways or Highways), you may need:
Stretchers: To safely move workers with suspected spinal or leg injuries.
Eye Wash Stations: Crucial if workers are handling cement, chemicals, or performing welding/grinding.
Blankets: To treat patients suffering from shock or exposure.
5. The First Aid Room (Large Sites)
For major infrastructure projects (usually those with 500+ workers), a dedicated First Aid Room is legally required. It must have:
A minimum floor area (usually 10-15 sq. meters).
A treatment couch or bed.
Running water and proper lighting.
A dedicated telephone line.
